Battery System for 5‑Ton Long-Haul Electric Refrigerated Trucks
Project Duration: August 2023 – April 2024
Buyer: GS Global
Role: Lead Battery System Design, Manufacturing, and Testing
Project Overview
Korea’s logistics industry lacked electrified refrigeration systems for trucks larger than 1 ton. This project tackled that gap by designing an independent, high-voltage battery system capable of powering a 5-ton class refrigerated truck over long distances without relying on the vehicle’s internal combustion engine.
I was responsible for full-cycle battery development, from architecture design and cell characterization to testing under IEC standards and field-ready validation.
My Contributions
- Designed a modular high-voltage battery system with CCS1 and DQC fast-charging compliance
- Performed thermal runaway suppression validation under abuse testing conditions
- Led all test protocols: UN38.3, IEC 62619, IEC 62620
- Oversaw cell-level test fixtures, BMS integration, and full enclosure prototyping
Outcomes
- First CCS1-compliant refrigerated truck battery system above 30kW in Korea
- Achieved simultaneous support for slow and high-speed vehicle charging
- Completed functional validation and integrated system prototyping
